The United States has decided not to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) as it currently stands, opting for a more frequent review process. Instead of sticking to the original six-year review cycle, the agreement will now be evaluated annually. This decision comes as US officials seek to address ongoing trade imbalances with Canada and Mexico before committing to a long-term renewal.

Despite the shift to annual reviews, the USMCA will remain in effect. The move does not signal the termination of the trade pact but rather reflects the US administration’s intent to negotiate potential updates to the agreement. Jamieson Greer, the US Trade Representative, emphasized that discussions with Canada and Mexico will continue in an effort to address existing concerns and enhance the agreement’s terms.

Mexico’s Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, expressed optimism about resolving differences through continued negotiations. He remains confident that the three nations can work together to address their respective concerns and maintain beneficial trade relations. The decision to opt for annual reviews is seen as a step towards achieving a more balanced trade agreement among the three countries.

Business groups, however, have raised concerns about the potential uncertainty that could arise from these yearly evaluations. They caution that such a move might create instability for companies and investors across North America. The USMCA currently supports around $2 trillion in annual trade, and any uncertainty could have significant economic implications for the region.
