A Russian tanker, named Universal, carrying approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel fuel, failed to reach its intended destination in Cuba and instead altered its course toward Brazil after spending weeks adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, which departed from Russia in April, initially charted a course for Cuba but was seen drifting around the Sargasso Sea, located northeast of the Caribbean, before it changed direction heading south.

Maritime tracking data revealed that the tanker’s intended destination was updated to “For order,” a maritime term signifying that the ship was awaiting further instructions or a final destination. This vessel is under sanctions from the United States, the European Union, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada. Reports indicate that Universal departed from the Russian port of Vistino in early April, with Russian naval vessels providing escort for parts of its journey until it entered the Atlantic Ocean.

The redirection of this tanker comes at a time when Cuba is grappling with severe fuel shortages and recurring electricity blackouts, a situation exacerbated by heightened pressure on fuel imports. This year, only one Russian tanker is reported to have successfully delivered oil supplies to Cuba, but those stocks have since been depleted, further straining the island’s energy resources.

Amid these fuel challenges, the United States continues to apply economic pressure on Cuba, urging political and economic reforms within the country. Diplomatic tensions between Washington and Havana have been escalating, particularly after the US initiated legal action against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 shootdown incident involving the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. In a related development, the US recently deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its accompanying strike group to the region.
