President Donald Trump has suggested that redrawing borders could be part of a potential peace deal for Ukraine, a controversial idea he floated while announcing his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting is scheduled for next Friday, August 15, in Alaska.
“It’s very complicated, but we’re going to get some back, we’re going to get some switched,” Trump told reporters. “There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both.” This statement implies a negotiated settlement where Ukraine might have to formally cede some territory in exchange for peace, a concept anathema to many Ukrainians and their allies.
The proposal has immediately raised concerns about rewarding Russian aggression and undermining international law. It also puts Trump at odds with allies who are simultaneously increasing pressure on Russia, such as with the newly lowered oil price cap, to force a withdrawal, not a negotiated partition.
While Trump presents this as a pragmatic solution, Ukrainian soldiers on the front line are fighting to defend their current borders. A commander in the Zaporizhzhia region voiced their determination, saying, “We are on our land, we have no way out… we stand our ground.” This highlights the immense political and emotional difficulty of any deal that involves surrendering land.
