Theatrical exhibitors are entering a waiting game, preparing for a slow six-week period before the next onslaught of blockbusters. This comes after a surprisingly robust year, exemplified by the horror hit Weapons, which has amassed $148.8 million in global ticket sales, far exceeding its initial investment.
2025 has been a year of welcome surprises at the multiplex. The astounding $828 million gross of Jurassic World Rebirth and the strong performance of films like Sinners have proven that the theatrical model is vibrant when supported by compelling, fresh content that captures the public’s imagination.
However, the immediate future presents a challenge. The release schedule is light on guaranteed hits, meaning theaters will have to work harder to attract audiences. A collection of smaller films, alongside established draws like The Conjuring: Last Rites, will be tasked with filling seats until the next major releases arrive.
The industry is looking to October for a major turnaround. The launch of Tron: Ares is expected to kick off a highly profitable quarter for theaters, with a slate that includes Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2. Analysts note that theaters are in a good financial position to manage this anticipated dip in revenue.
