In a recent development concerning the FIFA World Cup, Mexico has agreed to accommodate Iran’s national football team during the tournament. This decision came after the United States reportedly turned down the request to host the Iranian squad throughout the event, despite Iran’s group-stage matches being scheduled in the US.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the arrangement, revealing that FIFA had reached out to Mexico following the US authorities’ refusal to allow the Iranian team to stay overnight. Consequently, Iran’s training base has been relocated to Tijuana, Mexico, which is strategically positioned near the US border and close to San Diego, California. FIFA has officially updated the team base camp locations to reflect this change.

Originally, Iran planned to set up its World Cup base in Tucson, Arizona. However, rising tensions in the Middle East and complications related to US sanctions on Iran reportedly disrupted those plans. Sheinbaum assured that Mexico is more than willing to host the Iranian squad and is currently working with FIFA to finalize the necessary logistical arrangements.

Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, noted that the move to Tijuana would help circumvent potential visa issues. He also mentioned the convenience of direct travel to Mexico via Iran Air flights, facilitating a smoother transition for the team. Meanwhile, the US State Department has affirmed Iran’s participation in the World Cup but has not provided specific reasons for why the team will not reside in the US during the tournament.

The FIFA World Cup is set to take place from June 11 to July 19, with the United States, Mexico, and Canada jointly hosting the prestigious event. The relocation of Iran’s base to Mexico underscores the intricate diplomatic and logistical challenges that can arise in international sports events amid geopolitical tensions.
