Progress is being made toward a potential new trade agreement between Mexico and the United States, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday. This follows a recent phone conversation between Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump, where trade negotiations were the primary focus.
The discussion, which took place on Wednesday, was described by Sheinbaum as productive. However, she emphasized that no final agreement has been reached. The talks are part of ongoing efforts to address issues related to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), particularly concerning tariffs on Mexican automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
According to Sheinbaum, she has engaged in discussions with Trump 22 times since January 2025. Typically, the details of these conversations are disclosed publicly once concrete agreements are in place. The latest discussion, she noted, was centered solely on trade matters, leaving out other bilateral issues such as security and anti-drug trafficking efforts.
Both countries are continuing their dialogue as they aim to resolve outstanding trade concerns and finalize a new agreement. The ongoing negotiations are crucial as they could influence the economic landscape of the region, affecting industries and market dynamics on both sides of the border.
